What is Pelvic Physical Therapy?

Pelvic Physical Therapy is a specialty area within the physical therapy practice dedicated to the treatment of conditions unique to the pelvic region. A pelvic health physical therapist has advanced training and experience in assessment and treatment of conditions such as pelvic pain, bladder incontinence, bowel incontinence, prolapse, pelvic floor dysfunction, pain with sexual intercourse, and more.

Many individuals experience one or more of these conditions throughout their lifetime. It is a common misconception that it is a normal part of aging or that there is no help available. Often, these notions result in under reporting and thus under treatment of these conditions. Many of these symptoms and conditions are treatable through manual physical therapy, strengthening, coordination exercises, and behavioral changes.

Symptoms:

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms below, you may benefit from seeing a pelvic physical therapist:

  • Loss of urine with coughing, sneezing, running, or night time urination
  • Increased urge to urinate and/or increased frequency of urination
  • Adjusting daily routine/avoiding social activity because of symptoms
  • Pain with pelvic examination/sexual activity
  • Feelings of pelvic floor “falling out”
  • Lack of bowel control
